Jnana Mudra (Knowledge Mudra)
Jñāna Mudrā
gyah-NAH moo-DRAH • Knowledge/Wisdom Gesture
The mudra of supreme knowledge and wisdom, enhancing memory, concentration, and spiritual understanding

About This Mudra
Jnana Mudra is one of the most revered and widely practiced mudras in yoga and meditation traditions. The word 'Jnana' means knowledge or wisdom in Sanskrit, and this gesture represents the union of individual consciousness (Atman) with universal consciousness (Brahman). The index finger represents the individual soul, the thumb represents the supreme consciousness, and their union symbolizes the ultimate goal of yoga - the realization of non-duality (Advaita). This mudra is mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita, where Lord Krishna teaches in this gesture, and in countless Upanishads as the seal of wisdom. In Jnana Mudra, the hands rest on the knees with palms facing upward, symbolizing receptivity to divine wisdom. It is the gesture of teachers (Gurus), sages (Rishis), and all who seek to understand the true nature of reality. Regular practice sharpens the intellect, improves memory, reduces mental fatigue, and opens the gateway to spiritual knowledge.
