Story Summary
Morning breaks over Kurukshetra, and the Pandavas return to their camp, expecting to celebrate their victory. Instead, they discover the massacre that occurred in the night. The Upapandavas—Draupadi's five sons—are found dead, killed in their sleep. Dhrishtadyumna, the commander who led them through the war, is also dead. Shikhandi and other warriors have fallen. The camp that had been filled with celebration is now a place of death and tragedy. Draupadi's grief is overwhelming as she loses all five of her sons. Yudhishthira's despair is profound—victory has turned to ash. The Pandavas, devastated and enraged, vow to find and bring justice to Ashwatthama, the perpetrator of this terrible act.
