Krishna begins describing His material nature (prakriti). The eight elements: five material elements (earth, water, fire, air, space) and three mental elements (mind, intelligence, ego). 'Bhinnā prakṛtir aṣṭadhā'—divided material nature, eightfold. This is Krishna's lower nature—the material world that appears separate but is actually His manifestation. Everything in the material world—physical objects, thoughts, feelings, identity—comes from these eight elements. This verse sets up the distinction between material nature (this verse) and spiritual nature (next verses), showing that Krishna encompasses both.
How this ancient wisdom applies to your daily life

You see the world—trees, mountains, oceans, your thoughts, feelings, identity. You think: 'Is this all just material, or is there something deeper?' This verse addresses that question. Krishna says: everything you see—earth, water, fire, air, space, mind, intelligence, ego—is His material nature. It's real, but it's the lower nature. The material world isn't separate from the divine—it's the divine's material manifestation. Understanding this transforms how you see everything.

Do you see the material world as separate from the divine, or as the divine's material manifestation? When you see earth, water, fire, air, space, your mind, intelligence, ego—do you see only material elements, or the divine manifesting as material?
