Krishna completes the description of three kinds of austerity with tamasic austerity. 'Mūḍha-grāheṇātmano yat pīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ'—that austerity (tapas) which is performed (kriyate) with foolish understanding (mūḍha-grāheṇa), tormenting the self (ātmanaḥ pīḍayā). 'Parasyotsādanārthaṁ vā'—or for the purpose of destroying others (parasya utsādanārtham). 'Tat tāmasam udāhṛtam'—that is declared (udāhṛtam) to be tamasic (tāmasam). Tamasic austerity is performed with ignorance, tormenting yourself or others, or for the purpose of harm. It's not about growth or duty—it's about ignorance and destruction. Understanding this helps you recognize and avoid tamasic austerity.
How this ancient wisdom applies to your daily life

This verse reveals that tamasic austerity is performed with foolish understanding, tormenting the self, or for the purpose of destroying others. Tamasic austerity is destructive rather than beneficial. It's not about growth or duty—it's about ignorance and destruction. When you practice with ignorance, harm yourself or others, or practice for the purpose of destruction, you practice tamasic austerity. Understanding this helps you recognize and avoid tamasic austerity. The goal isn't to judge tamasic austerity—it's to recognize it and move toward sattvic austerity, which supports growth rather than causing harm.

Do you practice austerity with ignorance, tormenting yourself, or harming others? Is your practice destructive rather than beneficial? How can you move toward sattvic austerity?
