About This Mudra

Surya Mudra, also known as the Sun Mudra or Agni Vardhak Mudra, is a powerful hand gesture that increases the fire element (Agni Tattva) in the body. According to ancient Ayurvedic and Yogic texts, this mudra activates the digestive fire, boosts metabolism, and helps in weight management. The sun represents transformation and energy in Vedic philosophy, and this mudra channels that solar energy within. By pressing the ring finger (associated with Earth element) down with the thumb, we reduce the Earth element and increase Fire, creating heat and stimulating transformation. This mudra is particularly beneficial for those with slow metabolism, thyroid issues, or seeking to reduce body weight. Regular practice kindles the inner digestive fire (Jatharagni), improving digestion and nutrient absorption.

How to Practice

  1. 1Sit comfortably in a meditative posture with spine straight
  2. 2Rest both hands on your thighs or knees with palms facing upward
  3. 3Bend your ring finger and press it down toward the palm
  4. 4Place the tip of your thumb on top of the bent ring finger, pressing gently
  5. 5Keep the other three fingers (index, middle, and little) extended and relaxed
  6. 6Apply gentle but firm pressure with the thumb on the ring finger
  7. 7Maintain this position with both hands
  8. 8Close your eyes and breathe deeply
  9. 9Focus on the solar plexus area, visualizing warmth and fire
  10. 10Hold for 15-45 minutes daily, preferably in the morning

Breathing Pattern

Breathe deeply and slowly. With each inhalation, visualize drawing in golden solar energy. With each exhalation, feel the fire element spreading warmth throughout your body, particularly in the solar plexus region.
